The Blue Jackets have traded forward Antoine Vermette to the Phoenix Coyotes for two draft picks and goaltender Curtis McElhinney.

The Jackets get a second-round pick in 2012 (previously owned by Ottawa) and a fifth-round pick in 2013. McElhinney, who had abdominal surgery in January is not expected to play the rest of this season.

“This is moving forward,” Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson said. “We have to move forward. It wasn’t working this season as we expected. We’re going to move forward and this is part of the process of reshaping the team.

“Antoine was very professional, just as I expected he would be. I thanked him and his wife Karen, who did a lot of work in our comminity, for being such a good player and such a good person for our organization.”

Vermette, 29, played his 600th NHL game on Tuesday. In 241 games with Columbus, Vermette had 61 goals, 91 assists and 112 penalty minutes. His best season was in 2009-10 when he had 27 goals, 38 assists and 65 points, all career highs.

McElhinney, who is in the final year of his contract, had abdominal surgery in January and is not expected to play this season. However, in order to facilitate the trade, the Coyotes needed to move a player off their roster as they were nearing the roster maximum of 50 players.

Vermette was in the first year of a four-year, $14 million contract. He is signed through the 2014-15 season with a $3.75 million cap hit.

“This gives us more flexibility,” Howson said. “It’s never fun trading anybody. I don’t think any GM enjoys that. But this is about us moving the team forward.”

More to follow.

If the Division I Central District high school boys basketball tournament is anything like the regular season, there should be plenty of drama over the next two-plus weeks.

It’s no surprise that Northland has continued on its run that began with a district title in 2007 and included the state championship in 2009, but new powers such as Olentangy Liberty and Pickerington Central also have emerged this winter.

Opening the door further to a season of transition were season-ending injuries to some of the area’s top talents in Dublin Coffman’s Kyle Molock, Westerville North’s Jack Gibbs and Delaware’s Matt Bingaya.

Here’s a breakdown of things to watch for in the three brackets for the Division I district tournament, which begins Thursday, Feb. 23:

BRACKET 1

Best potential matchup in first two rounds: Olentangy Orange vs. Reynoldsburg in second round. The Pioneers could face a Raiders team that has bounced back from a rough start.

Players to watch: Pickerington North’s Jake Butt; Thomas Worthington’s Will Hill; Northland’s Jordan Potts, Jalen Robinson and Devon Scott; Orange’s Andy Bosley; Reynoldsburg’s Wendell Davis

Dark horses: Pickerington North (13th seed), Thomas Worthington (23rd seed)

Could win the title: Grove City (10th seed), Reynoldsburg (15th seed), Orange (ninth seed)

The favorite: Northland (top seed). Potts has been slowed by an ankle injury. Assuming his ankle continues to heal, the Vikings should have little trouble at the district level.

BRACKET 2

Best potential matchup in first two rounds: Upper Arlington vs. Mount Vernon in second round. The Yellow Jackets won the OCC-Capital Division and the Golden Bears won the OCC-Central.

Players to watch: Walnut Ridge’s Alassane Kah and Fred Hardgrove; Liberty’s Jake Bischoff and Nick Archer; Gahanna’s Aaron Jackson; UA’s Connor Casey

Dark horses: Coffman (16th seed), Dublin Scioto (22nd seed). Both the Shamrocks (Jamey Collins) and Irish (Tony Bisutti) have coaches who have been in numerous big games.

Could win: Gahanna (11th seed), Liberty (third seed), Upper Arlington (seventh seed). Liberty is a well-rounded team that is showing that it truly has a great senior class. The Lions and Bears both have flaws but each possesses talent.

The favorite: Walnut Ridge (second seed). No team in central Ohio has as much depth as the Scots, and there are few who can match them in size.

BRACKET 3

Best potential matchup in first two rounds: Olentangy vs. Delaware in first round. The Braves beat the Pacers 64-54 on Dec. 30, but the Delaware County rivalry factor adds intrigue.

Players to watch: Westerville South’s Marcus Ball; Newark’s Christian Keller; Pickerington Central’s Caris LeVert; Westerville North’s Matt Rhodes; Delaware’s Michael Wells

Dark horses: Delaware (21st seed), Westerville Central (24th seed). Wells is the area’s leading scorer, which makes the Pacers dangerous. Central doesn’t have a winning record but beat Liberty 49-46 on Feb. 10 and has reached back-to-back district finals.

Could win: Pickerington Central (fourth seed), Newark (sixth seed), Westerville South (eighth seed). Neither Newark nor South has as much talent as in past years, but both have the coaching to make long runs. The best still could be yet to come for Central considering its stable of young athletes.

The favorite: Westerville North (fifth seed). Without Gibbs, the Warriors might not have as much talent as Pickerington Central, but they do hold the advantage in big-game moments. There’s also the intangible of overcoming adversity this season that tends to bring a team together.

It should be an entertaining and, at times, unpredictable district tournament.

Beyond that, it’s tough not to like Northland’s chances of making it to state for the third time in four seasons.

The Vikings have two standout 6-foot-8 senior post players in Robinson and Scott. Senior wing player Ke’Chaun Lewis and Potts, a senior guard, also have been key players for what has been central Ohio’s premier program the past five years.

That experience can’t be overlooked.

An amended tax incentive deal with the city, building off earlier jobs additions, is part of the plan.

The company already has about 3,500 employees in Westerville, and 18,000 overall in Central Ohio.

Josh Helmholdt
Rivals.com Football Recruiting

MORE: Event preview | Smith feature | Top performers

INDIANAPOLIS – Monday’s Best of the Midwest combine brought in top prospects not only from Indiana, but also from Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky and even Tennessee. It featured six Rivals250 prospects, as well as a number of under-the-radar prospects who made names for themselves with their performances.

Rivals.com’s Josh Helmholdt reviews what was learned from the camp.

1. Smith taking game to next level

Fort Wayne (Ind.) Bishop Luers linebacker Jaylon Smith jumped out to us at the NIKE Football Training Camp in Columbus last May as an obviously talented, at-the-time sophomore. His junior film furthered that strong impression and he made a high debut in the Rivals100 released earlier this month. Still, his performance on Saturday surpassed even our lofty expectations.

The one question with Smith was whether he would have the size to play a SAM linebacker role, which could highlight his abilities to rush the passer and play in space. Measuring in at 6-foot-3 and 202 pounds at the beginning of his junior year, Smith is at least 6-3 now and his weight is close to 220 pounds. He has a narrow waist, but there is easily room on his frame to add 15-20 pounds of good weight.

With that question answered, then it was time to sit back and admire Smith’s extraordinary athleticism. There’s a natural feel for the game he demonstrates on the field, which comes through even during basketball season. Running two 4.4-second 40-yard dash times is nice, but it is the way he translates that to the field, with an explosive brand of power and speed. There’s no question: Smith is an elite, national recruit.

2. Explosive Indiana defensive ends

Although they were not on the initial expected campers lists, both of the state of Indiana’s Rivals250 defensive ends – Elijah Daniel of Avon and David Kenney of Indianapolis Pike – made it in for Monday’s Best of the Midwest Combine. We had seen Daniel live last fall in a state playoff game, but this was our first time seeing Kenney outside of film.

Not having seen Kenney in person before, we were most interested to gauge his size. Listed at 6-2 and 250 pounds, we were pleased that the 6-2 height appeared to be accurate. That is not ideal, but is far from a major detraction. South Carolina defensive end Melvin Ingram is a likely first-round draft pick this year at 6-2 and Brandon Graham was a first-round pick in 2010 at just 6-1. Kenney said his weight is actually down to 240 pounds now from a high of 260, but that is a good thing because he looked cut up and carried little to no bad weight.

Daniel is taller and longer at 6-4 and 253 pounds, but the attribute both prospects share is an explosive first step. They are exceptionally quick out of the blocks and maintain that momentum through to the quarterback. Both will need to get stronger at the point of attack, but with a premium placed on speed off the edge in the college game, the two state of Indiana pass rushers will continue to rack up scholarship offers.

3. Big hitters

Just as there is a common theme between Kenney and Daniel, there is also an attribute common between Indianapolis Ben Davis safety Antonio Allen and Indianapolis Warren Central linebacker Tim Kimbrough – they are two of the most devastating hitters in the Midwest in 2013.

Both the 5-foot-10, 200-pound Allen and the 6-1, 216-pound Kimbrough are shorter, stockier players for their position, and a combine setting is not the best showcase for their skill sets, but we walked away more than pleased with what we saw out of both. Allen has a smooth backpedal and Kimbrough looked fluid turning to run with receivers and backs. They always will be known as hitters first, but both showed potential in pass coverage on Monday.

4. Indiana’s receiver crop is legit

Although they have not generated the early hype or college attention that their in-state Rivals250 brethren have, Indiana’s wide receiver corps is very deep in the junior class and could have as many as six or more who sign Division I letters of intent in 2013.

Brownsburg’s Chase Dutra stood out as the most impressive of the bunch on Monday, but he was followed closely by Fort Wayne Homestead’s Isaac Griffith, Avon’s Jalen Edwards, South Bend Clay’s Wesley Thomas, Indianapolis Cathedral’s Sampson Levingston and Indianapolis Heritage Christian’s Anthony Warrum.

Thomas has arguably generated the most attention so far, and at 6-foot and 185 pounds he is a good-looking athlete with nice top-end speed. Levingston is built similar to Thomas. He may not have the same speed, but had a knack for getting open in 7-on-7s.

Griffith just does everything with such precision. From his route running to his performance in the pro agility shuttle, the 6-foot, 180-pound prospect has no wasted motion and is very efficient in his movements. He was creating separation in one-on-ones simply because his routes were flawless. Warrum has a very similar game to that of Griffith, and is a technician at the position.

Several of these prospects are going to be borderline BCS/mid-major types, but all showed the ability to find a spot on Division I rosters.

5. Sleepers emerge

A combine like the one on Monday in Indianapolis always brings to light under-the-radar prospects, and the Best of the Midwest was no exception. We knew wide receivers such as Dutra, Griffith, Thomas and Warrum coming in, but Avon (Ind.) pass-catcher Jalen Edwards was a fairly new name and he earned MVP honors at the position. Edwards is explosively quick, but a little undersized at 5-10 and 160 pounds.

Fort Wayne (Ind.) Concordia’s Michael Hicks is a linebacker to watch in the 2013 class. He runs pretty well for a 6-3, 237-pound kid. Indianapolis (Ind.) Decatur Catholic tight end Marcellus Edwards is also put together well at 6-4 and 220 pounds. He ran a very solid 4.79 40-yard dash and showed natural hands as a receiver.

Two prospects who emerged on the offensive line were Greenwood (Ind.) Center Grove tackle Skylar Lacy and Westerville (Ohio) South tackle/guard Zachary Murdock. Lacy is a huge kid who could be pushing 6-7 and showed decent mobility. Murdock is not as big, but more athletic and had good success in one-on-one’s.

Also keep an eye on Murdock’s teammate at Westville South, linebacker Jordan Rodriguez. Physically, the 6-3, 220-pound Rodriguez was one of the most impressive linebackers in attendance. He plays a little stiff, but is decently athletic and has above average strength.

The agency said six of the violations lodged against Exel, of Westerville, Ohio, were willful, for not recording injuries and illnesses over a four-year period and not taking required steps to protect workers’ hearing.

The citation of SHS, of Lemoyne, Pa., was for not training employees regarding safe handling of high-energy equipment. A current phone listing for SHS could not be located.

The Exel citations documented cases of workers being hit by falling boxes, being cut by cardboard and suffering a variety of injuries.

Exel spokeswoman Lynn Anderson said the company planned to fight the findings, adding that they involved only the co-packing area within the Palmyra facility, and that they mostly involved record-keeping.

Hershey spokesman Jeff Beckman said the company was confident Exel would adjust its practices to address the OSHA concerns.

Alliance legal director Jennifer Rosenbaum said the citations demonstrated that Exel did not maintain a health and safety system that would allow someone to work there on a permanent, long-term basis.

“These are the kinds of violations that are supposed to be the wake-up call for an employer to improve its health and safety regime internally,’’ Rosenbaum said.

In August, concerns about working conditions led more than 100 foreign students who worked at the facility to protest in adjacent Hershey, saying they took the jobs in the belief they would be participating in a cultural exchange, not to be working at low-paying menial jobs that left them little time or energy to do much else.

Anderson said Exel subsequently decided to end its practice of hiring people who hold J-1 Summer Work Travel visas issued by the U.S. Department of State.

The Department of Labor said its wage and hour division has been investigating possible violations regarding those students by the Council for Educational Travel, USA, which sponsored the students, and that a dispute over the agency’s subpoena of the organization remains in federal court. Messages seeking comment from CETUSA were not immediately returned.

Last month, the Department of State proposed changes to the J-1 program, in which more than 100,000 foreign college students work in the United States for up to four months. The proposal would ban jobs in factories or warehouses and in the adult entertainment industry, including strip clubs and massage parlors.

In the Region

Exel labor violations spur fines

Federal labor officials said Tuesday they found nine workplace violations at a candy repackaging and distribution facility owned by the Hershey Co. and operated by Exel Inc., the site of protests last summer by foreign student workers. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration proposed penalties of $283,000 against Exel after inspections prompted by a complaint by the National Guestworker Alliance on the students’ behalf. It also proposed a $5,000 fine against SHS Staffing Solutions, which helped place the students. The agency said six violations lodged against Exel, of Westerville, Ohio, were willful, for not recording injuries and illnesses over a four-year period and not taking required steps to protect workers’ hearing. – AP

New Penney’s set for Franklin Mills

A new J.C. Penney department store at Franklin Mills Mall is to open March 2, replacing a shuttered Penney’s Outlet Store at the same location, the company announced Tuesday. The 101,000-square-foot store at Franklin Mills Circle has been remodeled since the outlet was closed in July. The company said it had implemented a new strategy starting this month to offer merchandise at attractive prices on a daily basis, rather than inundating customers with sales, coupons, rebates, and “retail gimmicks.” – Maria Panaritis

Teva to settle lawsuits

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. will pay more than $250 million to settle more than 80 lawsuits alleging the drugmaker sold the anesthetic Propofol in a way that led colonoscopy patients to develop hepatitis C, sources familiar with the accords said. Teva, the world’s biggest maker of generic medicines, confirmed the settlement Tuesday without specifying how much it would pay. The company, based in Frazer, Pa., agreed to resolve claims by Las Vegas residents that it intentionally sold Propofol in vials large enough to be reused by doctors, sources said. Teva no longer makes Propofol. – Bloomberg News

New Marcellus pipeline proposed

A natural gas driller and a pipeline company propose to build a new pipeline to carry natural gas from Pennsylvania’s Marcellus Shale to the New York and New England markets. Cabot Oil Gas Corp. of Houston and Williams Partners L.P. of Tulsa, Okla., announced plans for the high- pressure, large-diameter pipeline Tuesday. The 120-mile Constitution Pipeline would transport gas from Cabot’s Marcellus Shale acreage in Susquehanna County to the Iroquois and Tennessee pipelines in New York state. The pipeline requires federal regulatory approval. – AP

No link seen between crime, drilling

A Pennsylvania State University study released Tuesday has found no definitive correlation between crime rates and natural gas drilling activity in the Marcellus Shale region. The preliminary report by the Justice Center for Research at Penn State found no consistent increases in arrests or calls to the Pennsylvania State Police in counties with high Marcellus drilling activity from 2006 and 2010. “More time needs to elapse before we can identify strong trends,” said coauthor Lindsay Kowalski. The report was produced in response to public concerns that the shale-gas boom is causing an increase in crime.

VideoRay moves to Pottstown

VideoRay L.L.C. and Pottstown Area Industrial Development Inc. (PAID) announced plans for the relocation of VideoRay’s headquarters to Pottstown. VideoRay, the global leader in observation Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) technology, is working on plans to acquire and renovate the former Levitz building at 212 E. High St. The building would initially be occupied by 35 VideoRay employees working in management, corporate administration, marketing, engineering, assembly, and repair functions. The rapidly growing manufacturer of very small underwater ROVs expects to increase the size of its workforce over the next several years. – Inquirer Staff

Renewable-energy plant planned

The Philadelphia Water Department has hired Ameresco Inc., a Framingham, Mass., renewable-energy company, to design, build, and maintain a biogas-burning cogeneration plant at its Northeast Water Pollution Control Plant. The $47.5 million project will generate 5.6 megawatts of electricity and thermal energy for use at the treatment plant. Michael T. Bakas, Ameresco’s senior vice president, said the project was sized based upon projections about how much biogas is produced from the decomposition of sewage in the plant’s digesters. The Water Department estimates the project will save $12 million in energy costs.

Elsewhere

Pay cut for ATT’s chief officer

ATT’s board cut CEO Randall Stephenson’s 2011 pay by $2.08 million because he engineered the failed deal to buy T-Mobile USA, according to a regulatory filing. The collapse of the deal, in the face of opposition from antitrust regulators, cost ATT $4.2 billion in cash and spectrum rights that it had to hand over to T-Mobile. Stephenson’s 2011 pay package was worth $18.7 million, based on the filing from the Dallas-based phone company. The board cut Stephenson’s cash bonus by 25 percent and also took the cost of the T-Mobile deal into consideration when awarding stock. Stephenson earned $20.2 million in 2010.

Google adds real-time pricing

Google Inc. will carry real-time pricing from leading European stock exchanges, the company said Tuesday, marking an expansion of the online search giant’s financial offerings. Google said it was now publishing live data from the London Stock Exchange, Frankfurt’s Deutsche Boerse, and Milan’s Borsa Italia. Stock prices from those exchanges had been carried on Google’s finance website with a 15-minute delay. The company already carries live quotes from the New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq, and others. – AP

Medco Health sees gains

Medco Health Solutions Inc.’s fourth- quarter net income rose 12 percent, as gains from generic prescriptions and the pharmacy benefits manager’s specialty business helped offset costs from its pending acquisition by Express Scripts Inc. A new generic version of the cholesterol fighter Lipitor added about 3 cents per share to the Franklin Lakes, N.J., company’s earnings. Lipitor, the world’s top-selling drug, lost its patent protection late in the fourth quarter. – AP

More people carrying credit cards

The TransUnion credit reporting agency said more people were carrying credit cards after the banking industry opened up lending a bit in 2011. The number of new cards issued to consumers rose 14 percent in 2011, with about a quarter of them going to people with less-than-stellar credit histories, TransUnion said Tuesday. – AP

There appears to be no end in sight for Greg Oden and his troublesome knees.

The Portland Trail Blazers said yesterday that a procedure to clear debris out of Oden’s left
knee resulted in another microfracture surgery and that he will not play this season.

Oden had the surgery in Vail, Colo. It was originally expected to be an arthroscopic procedure
to clean out the 7-foot center’s knee, but the surgeon determined there was additional damage.

The former No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA draft from Ohio State has had two microfracture surgeries
on his left knee and one on his right. He has also undergone surgery for a fractured left
kneecap.

Oden, who has not played in an NBA game since Dec. 5, 2009, has appeared in 82 career games for
the Blazers, averaging 9.4 points and 7.3 rebounds.

It was expected that he might be able to play this season, but a checkup before the start of
training camp in December reportedly revealed concerns about a non-weight-bearing ligament in the
left knee, further setting back his rehabilitation. The Blazers and Oden initially agreed to an
$8.9 million qualifying offer for this year, but when the setback was announced the two sides
restructured the deal, which was dropped to $1.5 million. He will be an unrestricted free agent
following this season.

Last night’s highlights

Nets 100, Knicks 92 — Deron Williams scored a season-high 38 points to lead New Jersey.

Jeremy Lin finished with 21 points, nine assists and seven rebounds for New York. Carmelo
Anthony, in his return from a seven-game absence because of a strained right groin, shot 4 of 11
and scored 11 points.

Mavericks 89, Celtics 73 — Dirk Nowitzki had 26 points and moved into the top 20 on the NBA
career scoring list to lead Dallas.

Bulls 90, Hawks 79 — Chicago’s Derrick Rose looked sharp in scoring 23 points in his return
after missing five games because of back pain.

Notable

Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo was suspended two games without pay by the NBA for throwing a
ball at an official during a game against Detroit on Sunday. Rondo missed last night’s game at
Dallas and will sit out on Wednesday against Oklahoma City. … San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili
is expected to miss two weeks because of a strained left oblique. He missed 22 games this season
because of a broken left hand.

CHICAGO — A sense of order prevails at Noble Street College Prep as students move quickly
through a hallway adorned with banners from dozens of colleges. Everyone wears a school polo shirt
neatly tucked into khaki trousers. There’s plenty of chatter but no jostling, no cellphones and no
dawdling.

The reason, administrators say, is that students have learned there is a price to pay —
literally — for breaking even the smallest rules.

Noble Network of Charter Schools charges students at its 10 Chicago high schools $5 for
detentions stemming from infractions that include chewing gum and having untied shoelaces. Last
school year, it collected almost $190,000 in discipline “fees” — a policy drawing fire from some
parents, advocacy groups and education experts.

Officials say the fees offset the cost of running the detention program and help keep small
problems from becoming big ones. Critics say Noble is nickel-and-diming its mostly low-income
students over insignificant, made-up infractions that force out students administrators don’t
want.

Students at Noble schools receive demerits for various infractions — four for having a cellphone
or one for untied shoelaces. Four demerits within a two-week period cost them a detention and $5
fine. Students who get 12 detentions in a year must attend a summer behavior class that costs
$140.

Superintendent Michael Milkie said the policy teaches the children — overwhelmingly poor,
minority and often hoping to be the first in their families to attend college — to follow rules and
procedures in a structured learning environment.

While fights can be an almost daily occurrence in some urban high schools, Milkie said there’s
only about one a year on each Noble campus.

But Donna Moore said the district is manufacturing problems that lead to unproductive badgering
of students, including her 16-year-old son, who had to repeat ninth grade at Noble’s Gary Comer
College Prep after racking up 33 detentions and several suspensions.

“It was nothing egregious, but just that the little things added up: a shirt unbuttoned, shoes
not tied, not tracking the teacher with his eyes,” said Moore, adding that her son has an attention
disorder. “It’s not normal to treat a young adult as a 2-year-old. … Kids internalize that.”

Seeing a season come to a close can inspire a number of different reactions, but the fact the Westerville North swimming and diving squads chose to spend the time following their last meet together, eating a meal, speaks volumes.

“We’re all good friends and we spend a lot of time with each other,” junior Devoney Miller said. “That’s a positive and after districts we went out to get pizza. We had just spent four months together and we still wanted to be with each other.”

Both the girls and boys squads finished 18th at the Division I district meet at Ohio State Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17-18.

The girls totaled 30 points.

Miller was 18th in the 50-yard freestyle (25.74) and 23rd in the 100 free (55.79).

The junior hopes to continue to improve in those events and reach the state meet next season.

“It was really a confidence booster to go to districts seeded eighth,” she said. “I’d really like it next year if districts can be my taper meet and I could know that I could drop a lot of time and advance on to states.

“That’s my goal. There’s some things I have to work on, but I want to get there.”

Sophomore Morgan Bernhard placed 17th in the 200 free (2:03.03) and 15th in the 500 free (5:35.94).

Sophomore Emily Jeffries was 16th in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.33) and junior Ellen Williams was 28th (1:15.92).

Jeffries came in 17th in the 200 individual medley (2:21.82).

The 200 free relay was 15th (1:46.15), the 400 free relay placed 20th (4:02.82) and the 200 medley relay finished 12th (1:54.89).

“Everyone swam really well,” Miller said. “I think the majority of us had a time drop. I dropped over a second in the 50 backstroke in the medley relay. It’s kind of uncommon for people to drop that much from week to week.”

North’s boys scored 29 points.

Senior Erick Bey placed fifth in the 50 free (22.04) and 18th in the 100 free (50.15).

Freshman Matthew Bernsdorf was 24th in the 200 free (1:52.52) and 23rd in the 100 butterfly (56.59).

Seniors Andrew Romero (59.80) and Mike Hicks (1:01.54) were 26th and 29th in the 100 backstroke, respectively.

Senior Wes Straw finished 27th in the 100 breast (1:05.37) and was 29th in the 200 IM (2:17.64), while junior Brian Diep was 25th in the 200 IM (2:12.38).

The 400 free relay was 17th (3:25.54) and the 200 medley relay was 19th (1:49.63).

Senior Kevin Duhl came in eighth in the 1-meter diving competition (391.55).

Girls basketball

The Warriors (12-9) lost their first-round D-I tournament game to Hilliard Bradley 60-42, at Olentangy Orange Thursday, Feb. 16.

Devin Jackson scored 16 points and Hannah Ferguson had 12.

Boys basketball

North (16-4) ended its regular season with a 68-61 home win over Olentangy Feb. 17.

Matt Rhodes scored 22 points, while Jaylen Benton (12) and Tavion Thomas (11) were also in double figures.

The Warriors are to open D-I tournament play with a matchup against Watkins Memorial at Jonathan Alder Thursday, Feb. 23, at 7:45 p.m.

North, the fifth seed, would play Franklin Heights at Alder March 2, at 6 p.m. with a first-round win.

Proving again it has a program in the upper echelon of Central Ohio, the Westerville Central boys and girls swimming and diving teams let their presence be known at the Division I district meet at Ohio State Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17-18.

The boys took fourth place, scoring 148 points, finishing behind Upper Arlington (435), St. Charles (336) and Dublin Jerome (170).

“We were really happy with the boys,” coach Ron Staab said. “We planned it so we could shoot (to advance) in all three relays. It took a couple of guys, Dan (Fay) and Gabe (Whitaker) in particular, only swimming one (individual) event, but it worked out positively.”

All three relays did advance to the state meet in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:26.85), the 400 free relay (3:14.48) and the 200 medley relay (1:36.88).

Fay, a senior, advanced in the 100 butterfly (52.18), while Whitaker, a freshman, moved on in the 50 free (21.20).

“We got two automatic bids (in relays) and in the Central District, that’s huge,” Staab said. “You’re up against some strong teams. There’s a lot of tough competition and to come out with that was huge for us.

“Gabe’s seeded sixth (in the 50 free) and he’s a freshman. To throw down a 21.20 as a freshman, there haven’t been a lot of freshmen do that in the last 20 years.”

The girls finished fifth with 153 points, behind UA (522), Watterson (213), Thomas Worthington (213) and Dublin Coffman (154).

“We’re equally happy with the girls,” Staab explained. “To come out second in the 200 free relay (1:38.07) was huge for us.

“We were third in the 400 free relay (3:33.74). One of those is automatic and even the one that wasn’t, we’re still in the top 10 (going in).”

Also advancing was senior Taylor Schwartz in the 100 backstroke (58.39), junior Sally Thompson in the 100 free (52.94) and sophomore Alex Schuttinger, also in the 100 free (53.11).

Schwartz and Fay will be joined by fellow seniors Atticus Jordan and John Whittaker, who’ll both swim in relays, as competitors who’ll be competing in their final prep meets.

“It’s bittersweet for them,” Staab said. “They don’t want to go, but they can put a fun finish to their high school careers. They’ve been integral parts since Day 1.

“Taylor is the first girl I’ve coached to the state meet all four years. She’s doing well for us.”

Schwartz has signed a letter of intent to compete at Gardner-Webb University beginning next fall.

The D-I state meet is to be held at Canton’s C.T. Branin Natatorium beginning with preliminaries Friday, Feb. 24, and ending with the finals Saturday, Feb. 25.

Boys basketball

Central (10-10, 7-7 OCC Cardinal) pulled to the .500 mark in both the league and overall with a 57-47 home win over Jerome Feb. 17.

Max Shawver, Christian Graves, Jared Edens and Eric James each scored 11 points.

The Warhawks are to take on Logan in the first round of the D-I sectional-district tournament at Jonathan Alder Feb. 24, at 7:45 p.m.

A win would put Central against either Westerville South or Teays Valley at Alder Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 7:45 p.m.

Jane Watson, an instructor, works with cello student Edward Watson.

Almost five decades had passed since Bonnie Gilligan picked up the clarinet she played in her high-school band in Salem, Ohio.

Yet, for the past four Thursday afternoons, the retired schoolteacher, 64, has carried her dusted-off instrument to the Columbus Music Academy in Westerville, where she joins other older folks looking to rekindle or discover their musical acumen.

“It’s such a safe environment,” Gilligan, of Powell, said at a recent rehearsal, which included run-throughs of basic tunes such as Ode to Joy and Hot Cross Buns as well as pointers on dynamics, breathing techniques and pacing.

“It’s fun, relaxing — not stressful at all.”

Laughter and conversation filled the silences during the group class, which lacked any tinge of a stern, tedious tutorial.

Too late to learn? Never, as Gilligan knows.

So goes the tune of New Horizons, a nationwide network of music groups designed to educate and inspire adults in low-pressure, all-inclusive environments.

So what if the idea of tooting one’s horn seems foreign?

“As long as they can come to a rehearsal and play, they’re welcome,” said Wes Miller, a central Ohio music teacher who during the summer founded a New Horizons chapter.

“There’s a huge social component to this activity.”

The concept came to fruition in 1991 at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., where professor Roy Ernst held out the hope of working with older adults — beginners or long-ago virtuosos.

In a 2004 book, Ernst writes about the arrangement as flexible yet necessary to remain “completely supportive and free of competition and intimidation.”

“My motto is: ‘Your best is good enough.’  ”

His thinking caught on.

According to the New Horizons website, seven countries — including Australia and Italy — have 203 active groups.

Each central Ohio player is taught at his or her own pace by Miller and Jane Watson, also of the academy, in small clusters.

“It’s amazing I can do it,” said 66-year-old South Side retiree Edward Watson, who, in the fall, began playing cello for the first time.

“It’s challenging, but that’s something I like at my age.”

Although some New Horizons circles open only to those 50 and older, the 45-year-old Miller doesn’t discriminate against anyone younger.

Instruments are not provided. Participation costs $85 for a 10-week session and is open, Miller said, to anyone on “basic orchestra instruments” (no banjos or accordions, for example).

Miller, who has educated all ages in his 23-year career, knows that coaching even the most novice grown-up player can be a far different experience.

“Looking at an adult who’s 70, who has had a full life and is highly educated, it can be intimidating,” he said. “They ask intelligent, pointed questions.”

With a laugh, he added: “Their BS meter is real sensitive.”

The benefits of such instruction are strong.

A 1997 Michigan State University study found that senior citizens who took music lessons saw increased hormone levels, which in turn boost energy and reduce illness. Another, by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2003, determined that late-in-life leisure activities — including music — might lower the risk of dementia.

The opportunity has proved to be a sizable draw, said Laura Joss, professor and department chairwoman of music education at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, which since 2002 has hosted a New Horizons group that boasts 170 players — several of whom have formed independent ensembles.

“It seemed like the only time to start an instrument was in fifth grade” for many hopefuls, said Joss, a 49-year-old who instructs with the help of several dozen undergraduates. “But from the time they walk in the door, they’re part of a band.”

At the moment, enrollment in the Columbus group stands at only five participants. There’s plenty of room, Miller said, to accommodate more.

He envisions one day offering public concerts at nursing homes and senior centers to promote the spirit of possibility and casual entertainment.

For now, though, the graying students are focused solely on what’s in front of them — the musical horizons within attainable reach.

Lake Shore launches cryogen-free probe stations

Lake Shore Cryotronics Inc of Westerville OH, USA, which makes scientific sensors, instruments and systems for precise measurement and control, has launched the new Model CRX-VF and Model CRX-EM-HF cryogen-free probe stations.

The two new platforms add vertical and horizontal field to Lake Shore’s growing family of closed-cycle refrigerator (CCR) probe stations. The new CCR probe stations suit non-destructive measurement of the electrical, magneto-transport, electro-optical, parametric, high-Z, DC, RF and microwave properties of materials and test devices. Nanoscale electronics, quantum wires and dots, spintronic (TMR, GMR) devices, and semiconductors are typical materials measured.

Lake Shore says that the new probe stations are simple to operate, and that they control temperature efficiently using two-stage CCR cooling engines that cut ongoing usage costs by eliminating the challenges of sourcing and handling liquid cryogens. Cooling automation allows one-switch startup and unattended cool-down. The CCR probe stations provide full temperature instrumentation for accurate temperature measurement, stable control and optimized warm up for sample exchange, translating to research productivity. Depending on probe station and configuration, temperature ranges span from 8K to 500K, providing good temperature stability (10-20mK). The Model CRX-VF and CRX-EM-HF provide field strengths of 2.5T and 0.6T, respectively. Sample-stage vibration is limited to less than 1 micron throughout the full-scale temperature range so as not to affect measurement performance.

The new cryogen-free models expand Lake Shore’s overall line of probe stations to nine distinct models. “With the increasing costs of liquid helium, and the growing difficulty in obtaining it, we see more customers deciding to invest in cryogen-free measurement systems,” says Rob Ellis, VP of strategic planning. “Our globally installed base of CCR probes stations is growing rapidly,” he adds. CCR probe stations also simplify processes and reduce scheduling conflicts related to operating with cryogens, says the firm – personnel trained in cryogen transfers and monitoring of cryogen are no longer necessary.

Lake Shore is showcasing the new CCR probe stations in booth 200 at the American Physical Society’s March Meeting 2012 in Boston, MA (27 February – 2 March 2).
